Homeopathy offers a natural, safe and effective approach to first aid, acute and chronic issues that arise throughout the course of raising a family.  As a parent of young children I honestly do not know where I would be without access to homeopathic remedies for accidents, injuries and general childhood illnesses.  It can help with a wide range of health issues. From coughs and colds, viral infections, asthma, eczema, ear infections to the more complex behavioural problems many children are experiencing.

There are many different stresses in our everyday lives that can all contribute to a weakened immune system making us more susceptible to illness.  Homeopathy is a natural form of medicine that is safe for pregnancy, childbirth, babies and children of all ages, and can safely be used in conjunction with conventional medicines and treatments, but it is also very effective by itself.

Examples of some commonly used remedies that are used over and over again include: Arnica, Chamomilla, Belladonna, Pulsatilla, Gelsemium, Sulphur, Mercurius, and Hypericum.  There are also some wonderful self-help books available for acute and first-aid prescribing that enables a parent to choose a remedy for things like bee stings, sore throats, teething, diarrhoea and ear aches.

For children with chronic-illness eg; eczema, or frequent and repeated illnesses, a qualified homeopath attempts to address the underlying causes.  It aims to stimulate the body’s own healing forces to bring it to a state of balance, and by doing so optimises overall health and well being.

Therapeutic Massage : General Articulatory Technique

General Articulatory Technique (GAT) was originally named “General Osteopathic Technique” by Simon Fielding, a visiting osteopath from the UK, who taught this therapy approx. 20 years ago at South Pacific College of Natural Therapies in Ellerslie, Auckland.  This is the College where I studied for my Bachelor of Health Science Degree in Complementary Medicine which incorporates GAT and other forms of Therapeutic Massage, as well as Herbal Medicine and Naturopathy.

What is GAT?

GAT is a system of moving the joints of the body, the client being absolutely passive.  It is used to:

  • Improve the range of motion and function of restricted joints.
  • Improve functional postural deviations and misalignments.
  • It may improve performance in athletes and aids recovery.
  • It helps to release muscle tension and improve muscular skeletal conditions or diseases.

It is a technique that works well with, and complements other body therapies such as Muscle Energy Technique (which is an active osteopathic technique, where the client actively pushes against the therapist), Lymphatic Drainage, relaxation massage or sports massage and cross-fibre techniques, to give optimal results.


GAT is used to gently stretch restricted muscles, ligaments and joint capsules.  The movements are slow and deliberate, enabling the therapist to monitor response and adjust accordingly.  Common conditions which may be helped with this form of bodywork include ‘frozen shoulder’ and pelvic dysfunction which contribute to  ‘sway back’ and lateral tilt, where one hip is higher than the other.  Regular sessions may help to gently mobilize, relax and stretch the muscles around the spine, neck, shoulder and pelvic areas, providing greater freedom of movement, reducing pain caused by muscle tension and joint restriction and improving posture.


As with all massage therapies and bodywork, GAT should not be performed if the client has suffered recent injury resulting in fracture of bones, joint dislocation, open wounds, any acute infections or inflammation, severe osteoporosis or metastatic disease.


Before any treatment is undertaken, your therapist will record essential information to make sure there are no medical contra-indications, make a note of presenting symptoms and determine the client’s expectations and requirements.  Additionally a postural analysis may be undertaken to look at body alignment and if indicated, perform ‘range of motion’ tests to ascertain the most beneficial treatment plan for each individual.

Post Treatment

You may be provided with simple exercises or advice to support your treatment and it is important to record client feedback – both improvements and any problem areas – in order to reach the best outcome.

The common Plantain is easily confused with the broadleaf  weed, which is found on lawns, waste areas and paddocks.  Identification of the common Plantain would be its characteristic flower spike with long spear-like leaves, not the cluster of round leaves common of the broadleaf plantain. All can be used for medicinal purposes.

It’s a handy first aid herb for insect bites, stings, scrapes and other minor skin irritations. Instead of thinking it’s a “weed” and remove it from your garden, you might consider leaving it where it’s handy.General uses:
Insect bites, scrapes, scratches: Plantain is a great healer for minor cuts and very soothing for itchy skin. Pick fresh leaves and roll until they are soft and pliable then apply to the skin.

Sore Ears: Squeeze the juice from plantain leaves (using a blender works well here.) Add to some warm olive oil. Put three drops into each ear. Good for inflamed, sore, blocked ears.

Coughs: An infusion, by pouring a cup of boiling water on to a small handful of fresh plantain leaves and leave to steep for 10 minutes will help clear mucus from the lungs. Three cups a day is recommended.

Spiritually: Plantain is classed as the supreme cleanser and giver of life. It helps to clear out inner sources of irritation, congested thoughts or fixed ways which will be loosened up and greater clarity will be created. Through this type of adjustment and re-balancing, a new life can be created.

Perhaps more ancient then acupuncture, is a Qigong system of exercise called Yang Sheng (Yang Sheng = to feed the body). These exercises are considered “internal” because they act not only on muscles, tendons and sinews, but also on the Qi flow of the internal organs.

Yang Sheng is an ancient Taoist form that originated in China over 5,000 years ago. One of the best known of the therapeutic Yang Shengs is called Swimming Dragon, which imitates the serpent-like movements of a dragon swimming in the sea.
The power for supporting three major physiological activities is called the Triple Warmer or Three Burner system. Like the acupuncture channels and their many points, the burners cannot be found by dissection or exploratory surgery. They are not objects but bodily functions. They are unseen agents that keep the natural machinery of the body running smoothly.
The Three Burners are regulators of metabolism. The top burner is located in the upper chest and controls respiration. It powers the heart and lungs. The middle burner is in the upper abdomen and regulates digestion. It fuels the stomach, spleen, liver and pancreas. The lower burner is in the lower abdomen and pelvis, and directs elimination. Its fields are the intestines, bladder and kidneys.
The Swimming Dragon Yang Sheng is fairly simple, yet an excellent way of promoting healthy activity of these burners. The result is an improvement in general well-being, with tonification of the metabolic system. It is reputed to be the most effective Qigong practice for balancing body weight; the sinuous movements of the form help control the appetite, slenderize the waist, hips, thighs and buttocks and mobilize fats and toxins into lymphatic drainage.
The Swimming Dragon involves the whole body in a graceful rhythmic movement. It reduces tension, loosens joints, brings suppleness, massages the internal organs and stimulates lymph flow. It improves circulation of the blood and of course Qi. The Swimming Dragon stretches out the whole body completely, especially the spine, and helps to straighten and strengthen the back. It regulates the kidney channels according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, which in turn benefits the internal organs. Regular practice can rejuvenate the skin and promote vitality. The Swimming Dragon is also an enjoyable way to focus and calm the mind.
The movements also harmonize the hormonal system. This happens with the movements massaging the internal genital organs, which stimulates the jing energy, so it has a strong function on rejuvenation and balancing of the sexual energy. It can also improve the condition of many chronic problems around the genital organs and lower stomach and improve the power of fertility.
When practiced 20 minutes daily, this simple form balances the metabolism, glandular secretions and circulation of blood, lymph and body fluids, while promoting life-long health and inner peace.

It is so nice to see the Spring and sunshine after what feels like a long wet grey winter. This winter has certainly seen many people feeling down and a bit depressed. Many could well have been suffering from SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of winter depression that affects an estimated half a million people every winter. It is caused by a biochemical imbalance in the hypothalamus due to the shortening of day light hours and the lack of sunlight in winter.

For many people SAD is a seriously disabling illness, preventing them from functioning normally without continuous treatment. For others, it is a mild but debilitating condition causing discomfort but not severe suffering. SAD symptoms disappear in Spring or early Summer depending on the intensity of the sunlight.
SAD can affect adults, teens and children. It’s estimated that about 6% of our population experience SAD and females are about four times more likely than males to develop SAD.

SAD occurs throughout the Northern and Southern hemispheres, however is rare in those people living within 30 degrees of the equator where the daylight hours are long, constant and extremely bright.

Some of the symptoms of SAD are:
Sleep Problems – a desire to oversleep, difficulty staying awake and disturbed sleep
Lethargy – feelings of fatigue and inability to carry out normal routine
Overeating – craving for carbs and sweet food usually resulting in weight gain
Depression – feelings of misery and guilt along with loss of self esteem
Social problems – irritability and a desire to avoid social contact
Anxiety – tension and inability to tolerate stress
Loss of libido – decreased interest in sex
Mood Changes – mood swings

Counselling or any complementary therapy which helps sufferers to relax, accept their illness and cope with its limitations are extremely useful.
Light therapy has shown to be effective in up to 85% of diagnosed cases. Exposure to very bright light at least 10 times the intensity of domestic light every day for an average of 1-2 hours.

Itchy Dog Syndrome

Itchy Dog Syndrome

It’s the time of year for itchy skin in dogs.

This can be due to a number of things:
• Allergies to food
• Allergies to grasses
• Allergies to Fleas or their treatment

It could even be an underlying condition that is worsened by the increase in temperature and the humidity.

There are several ways this itchy skin can be addressed and resolved:
• Change of diet
• Over the counter homeopathic remedy
• Classical homeopathic consultation

I’ve successfully treated several dogs with all the above methods and sometimes it’s what fits in with your own life style or current circumstances.

There are few true allergies and it tends to be more a sensitivity to an external trigger that exasperates an on-going condition. The skin is the largest excretory organ so issues occurring internally may-be expressed externally.

A change of diet can often help and I have found that dogs do well on the raw food diet. This is where the dog is only feed raw meat and bones. In very basic terms a dog’s stomach is more acid than a human so has fewer issues with the bacteria. Grain requires an alkaline stomach to digest so the stomach is confused when feeding both meat and grain. The second option is a combination homeopathic remedy commercial product called Biopet Skin. This is a remedy made up of several homeopathic remedies that generally help with skin issues. It is not classical homeopathy, where a full consultation reviews the animal from top to toe inside and out and the individualised remedy is worked out but in a number of cases it may help reduce the impact on the dog. There is also Biopet Fleas and Biopet Grasses to deal with those specific sensitivities.

What I have found most successful is Classical homeopathy, where the remedy that is most suited to the dog’s physical, mental and emotional state is calculated out and prescribed. This option will take about an hour to an hour and a half. We can meet in the dog’s home or in my consultation area in Pukekohe. It is also possible to conduct a consultation via the internet but it really helps to see the dog. The consultation includes the remedy and may help address other issues the dog has. Understanding The Interplay Between Yoga & Stress

Stress seems to be a modern affliction.  Numerous physical and mental illnesses are attributed to stress and it appears to be growing into epidemic proportions, with every second person on the street complaining of being “stressed out.”  But it’s not often that we break it down to understand what is happening inside the body, or explore ways to decrease or eliminate it from our lives.

Stress begins with a physiological response to what your body-mind perceives as life threatening. The trigger may be an actual physical danger, like being cornered by a wild animal.  However, more often in modern times, the trigger is equated to less bodily threatening causes, such as the fear of an unstable economy, an episode of road rage or the possible end of a relationship.

Whatever the trigger, the mind alerts the body that danger is present.  In response, the adrenal glands, located above the kidneys, secrete catecholamine hormones.  These adrenaline and noradrenaline hormones act upon the autonomic nervous system, as the body prepares to fight or flee.  Heart rate, blood pressure, mental alertness, and muscle tension are increased. The adrenal hormones cause metabolic changes that make energy stores available to each cell and the body begins to sweat.  The body also shuts down systems that are not a priority in the immediacy of the moment, including digestion, elimination, growth, repair, and reproduction.

These adaptive responses have ensured the survival of the human race.  For our ancestors, a stressful situation usually resolved itself quickly.  They fought or they ran, and, after the danger passed, everything returned to normal.  The adrenal glands stopped producing stress hormones, and systems that were temporarily shut down resumed operation.

People in the modern world are often unable to resolve stress so directly, and live in a state of chronic stress as a result.  The adrenals continue to pump stress hormones. The body cannot benefit from nutrition because the digestion and elimination systems are slowed down. Even sleep is disturbed by this agitated state.

In a chronically stressed state, quality of life, and perhaps life itself, are at risk.  The body’s capacity to heal itself is compromised, either inhibiting recovery from an existing illness or injury, or creating a new one.  Stress-induced afflictions include high blood pressure, ulcers, back pain, immune dysfunction, reproductive problems, and depression. These conditions add additional stress and the cycle intensifies and continues.

Enter yoga.  It’s often touted as one of the best stress busters around.  Corresponding to the increased prevalence of stress, medical professionals are progressively pointing their patients in the direction of yoga.

Yoga directly counteracts both the physiological and psychological components of stress, simultaneously helping those who practice yoga to take better care of themselves and change their attitudes.  The stretching done in yoga relieves muscle tension.  Upside-down poses and reclining poses slow the heart, relax the blood vessels, inhibit production of norepinephrine, and calm the brain. Pranayama (yoga’s classic breathing practice) slows respiration.  Relaxation and meditation exercises stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system.  As we practice being more aware and mindful, we gain a sense of self-control, equanimity, and peace.  Perhaps most important of all, meditation and the underlying philosophy of yoga can help people to realize that most of the things that upset us just aren’t worth getting stressed about.

Middle-age is the time to get fit for a rewarding old-age.  How you cope when you reach retirement age depends on what you do now.  Now is the time to act.


Why is resistance training so important for us as we age?  ‘Maintaining STRENGTH is the No 1 fitness concern as we age’ (Fiatarone & Evans 1993) As we age we lose muscle mass, muscle strength & flexibility.  Over the years this results in loss of strength, mobility, bone density & metabolism.  This in turn leads to difficulties in functioning properly, falls, fractures & an increase in weight.  Resistance/strength training is a very cost effective way of prolonging the onset of all or any of the above.  Engaging in regular physical activity, namely strength training, can delay the normal ageing process by 10 – 20 years.   It is never too late to start.  Anybody can do it, no matter what their physical situation is.  The lost important thing you must have is the commitment to train.

How do you stick to your plan & not quit?

  • Schedule your workouts & make an appointment with yourself. Mark it on your calendar or diary
  • Set realistic goals of 2 or 3 sessions per week of about 45-60 minutes per session
  • Keep a training diary, record your progress.  Seeing results provides motivation
  • If you miss a few workouts don’t give up, start again.
  • Reward success


Having established that middle-age is the time to get fit for an enjoyable old-age & the fact that being fit will slow down the ageing process, the big question is –‘How do I start?’

  • Adopt a positive attitude, make a decision & set yourself some goals
  • Seek help and/or advice.  A large percentage of people who start a fitness regime quit between 6 – 12 weeks.  The frustrating thing is they quit just when they are on the verge of success
  • Don’t expect too much too soon
  • Stick with it
  • Give it a fair shot
  • Set realistic goals
  • Commitment will ultimately lead to success!

To Vaccinate or Not?

To Vaccinate or Not?

A contentious and controversial issue when discussing the vaccination of children – not quite as divisive as the Springbok Tour in the 80’s but quietly rating fairly high
I’m not going to discuss the vaccination of children but I am going to raise the question in regards to the vaccination of pets. Vaccination is where your pet is exposed to either live or generated bacteria that lead to disease in a small and controlled manner which encourages your pet ‘s immune system to build a defence against that disease so if they are exposed to it in the real world they can easily combat it and not be fatally effected. More and more people are questioning the vaccination regime – the majority of conventional veterinary medical practioners will advise to vaccinate and many advise annual boosters – but is it really necessary? I have been told that vaccinations now last 2 -3 years and yet an annual reminder is sent out by many vets – are they using a different type of vaccination? – Is it not as long lasting or dare I ask – is this a revenue stream? – A practice not questioned and in my opinion not necessarily looking out for the pet’s best interests. Vaccination is one of those emotive things – you must keep your vaccination certificate up to date if you are a loving caring owner.
This vaccination certificate is a vital piece of paper when booking your pets into kennels and catteries – the reason being so that your pet does not put other pets at risk – I myself am at a loss how this works – pets who have been vaccinated are endangered by your non-vaccinated pet – how does that work? Your pet without increased immunity and not exposed to the disease will infect those that are supposed to have increased immunity and have been exposed to the disease – my logic would suggest it is actually your pet that is at risk – not theirs
I vaccinated my older cat, who had appeared healthy, for cat flu as he had to go to the cattery – Noddy returned from the cattery with cat flu … he never really recovered and proceeded to suffer from diabetes and eventually lost the battle against it – I can’t blame the vaccination but I do question if it actually put his system under stress for no reason which meant he succumbed to another illness – we had wild cats next door who suffered from cat flu so he had been exposed and hadn’t contracted it until he was vaccinated – and then we had the kitten who wandered in from next door very ill with cat flu … she survived it – so logic would say that her body had immunity from it and yet the vet said she had to be vaccinated for it …..
Another friend has a dog who every year would get vaccinated and within a week was back at the vets for prednisone as she was scratching constantly – the possible link between the vaccination and the scratching wasn’t identified until she phoned me asking if I had something to help her instead of using a steroid – I gave her a homeopathic remedy called Dog Vaccine and the scratching ceased – now I can’t show causation or even cure but the coincidence is compelling. Please note the remedy Dog Vaccine is only useful for the ill effects of vaccination not as a replacement for vaccination.
A British Vet, Don Hamilton, who is also a Homeopath suggests in his book “Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs” 1 that it is a little more than coincidental – he has seen a link between vaccination and ill health and suggests that vaccination should only be done when all the criteria below are met:
• The disease is serious – even life threatening
• The animal is or will be exposed to the disease
• The vaccine is known to be effective
• The vaccine for the disease is known to be safe
His published experiences are a number of years old now and medical science has progressed but his recommendations still have merit. There are still side effects being shown from vaccination or vaccinating when there still should be immunity.
A healthy pet will fight off infections and build its own immunity; when they’re young and vulnerable it may be appropriate and sensible to vaccinate but are they actually at risk? Are they likely to come into contact of life threatening diseases? It is not simply a decision to vaccinate or not you are legally obligated to ensure your pet’s health – if you choose to ignore a vet’s advice to vaccinate a plan must be put in place to ensure your pet remains healthy and risk free. They must be fed a good healthy diet, access to clean water, regular exercise – basically kept at the peak of health – and seeking veterinary help at the first sign of any distress or ill health. An alternative is homeopathic protocols which can be used as an alternative to vaccination or in conjunction with vaccination to reduce the potential side effects – such as in the post-vaccination itchy dog.
Under my professional code of ethics I cannot tell you what your decision should be in regards to vaccination nor do I want to – my aim is to raise your awareness and invite your questioning of your current vaccination regime rather than just going along with the status quo – just because –
As in the case of the vaccinating children the vaccination of pets requires investigation, great thought and a non-emotive decision process – evaluating the risk of vaccinating or not and what protocols you can put in place to counter act any ill health as a result of your decision. Unlike children pets will hide ill health so a heightened awareness is required.

Move that Body- Exercise and Weight

More commonsense tells us to exercise regularly. Similar to the modern diet that lacks many of our essential nutrients for good health, modern lifestyles eliminate the movement that is so necessary to keep your body in shape and your joints healthy. Sitting in front of computers for work or play is NOT a physical workout. You have to find some form of exercise that gets you moving regularly.

Exercise and the Endocrine System

There is no way around it; without regular exercise you will never attain the correct body weight, nor will you ever be free of health problems.

What is it about exercise that makes it such a powerful weapon in the battle against excess weight? Many of us make the mistake of thinking that weight loss hinges on calories in (our food intake) and calories out (the energy we use when we exercise). This is true to a point, but exercise has an important function beyond the limits of calorie expenditure.

Exercise plays a crucial role in regulating the endocrine (hormonal) system by stimulating the production of many different hormones. A healthy endocrine system is the key to physical vitality and mental alertness. It also controls all aspects of weight management.

So, without exercise it is impossible to obtain your perfect weight.

What TYPE of Exercise is Best?

It is important to find an exercise programme that suits YOU and fits comfortably into your lifestyle.

If you want to stick with it, exercising needs to become a natural part of your day. It is also important to follow a balanced programme that incorporates the following: aerobic exercise, resistance or strength training and stretching.

Aerobic activity requires your heart and lungs to work at a steady pace. This increases oxygen consumption and is of great benefit to the lungs and cardiovascular system. Try activities like brisk walking, swimming, cycling, dancing, running or aerobics classes at the gym.

If you are a beginner, walking is the easiest to start with and also the cheapest and most natural. Almost anyone can brisk walk and as a bonus you don’t need any special gear (flat shoes and loose comfortable clothing are ideal). Set a brisk pace that gets your heart pumping. Swing your arms and stride out with purpose. As a form of exercise, walking is the one that with the fewest side effects and is also best for the back. Alternatively, rebounding on a small trampoline can be done indoors when its pouring with rain or there is not enough time to go for a long walk.

You can even do it while you watch the news on television, so there is, in fact, no excuse for not exercising in some way or another.

It is also important to do some form of resistance or strength training. This is not only good for muscle strength and tone, and for keeping the ligaments, tendons and joints in good working order, but it is also vital for building bone density. This slows down the aging process and keeps us independent as we grow older. Strength training also speeds up the metabolism. As we get older the metabolism tends to slow down as a result of muscle loss. This leads to the typical “middle aged spread” and the various problems associated with weight gain mentioned earlier. A programme of light weight training at the gym, regular gardening, good old press-ups or even a bout of vigorous house cleaning are all of benefit.

If you want to keep the spring in your step, you should not neglect to incorporate some stretching in your exercise routine. Stretching oxygenates the body tissues, keeps the joints strong and mobile, and ensures flexibility of the spine. You will find that with regular stretching, you are less prone to injury, your posture improves and that tension headaches become less frequent. This is particularly important if you lead a fairly sedentary lifestyle, spending a lot of time at your desk or in your car. So ward off the stiffness of old age by doing a stretch and tone class at the gym.

Lymphoedema and Skin Care

What Is The Lymphatic System?

As blood circulates around the body, fluid leaks out from tiny arterial capillaries known as arterioles. This fluid provides nutrients and oxygen to cells in the tissues. Most of the fluid returns to the blood vessels by tiny venous capillaries called venules, which pick up dead cells and other waste products from the cells in the tissues. The fluid that remains behind in the tissue spaces along with larger particles like proteins that are too big to re-enter the blood stream are picked up by the lymphatic system and are eventually returned to the bloodstream.

The lymphatic System is made up of Lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes. The smallest of the lymph vessels located just under the skin weave between the tissue cells and the arterial and venous capillaries in the tissue spaces and collect the excess fluid and large particles. These initial lymph vessels drain into larger vessels with one way valves which propel this fluid now called “lymph” towards the heart. Along the way, the lymph travels through lymph nodes where the fluid is filtered and special cells in the node destroy or contain organisms, bacteria and other debris so that they cannot travel to the bloodstream and spread to other parts of the body. There are about 600 nodes in the body with approximately 160 located in the neck. The size of a normal lymph node varies from 2mm – 3cm. On average the lymphatic vessels pump at a rate of 6 beats per minute which is far slower than the Vascular system and about 3 litres of lymph fluid is pumped around the body in a 24 hour period.

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a swelling caused by a buildup of protein rich fluid in the tissues and is a sign that the Lymphatic System is not working properly. This fluid behaves like a stagnant swamp and the cells cannot function as well and the tissues become clogged with waste. The most important of these cells are the Macrophages which are responsible for recognizing and ingesting foreign substances. In addition they assist other cells to activate the immune response and are therefore important in defending the body against bacteria.

There are two types of Lymphoedema, Primary and Secondary

Primary is caused by a poorly formed Lymphatic System. It can arise at Birth or Puberty and makes up about 10% of all Lymphoedemas. Secondary, is the result of trauma, surgery and removal of lymph nodes, with or without Radiation. Lymphoedema can arise immediately following surgery, or may not develop until months or years later. For some people, it may never develop. This dependant on how many Lymph Vessels and Nodes a person has before surgery and how many of these Vessels and Nodes had to be removed during Surgery.

Signs, Symptoms and Stages

Changes in; sensation, feelings of tightness, heaviness, swelling, aching and bursting pains.

Stage one
Acute phase – swelling lessens overnight. The skin is soft and when pushed in leaves a dent that fills again in a few seconds. Swelling is reduced by elevation and the limb is often normal or almost normal looking in the morning. The limb swells up again during the day. If this type of Lymphoedema occurs, it is often reversible with treatment and care.

Stage two
The skin thickens, hardens and becomes less elastic. There is less skin pitting. The limb becomes more sensitive to infection. By this time the condition is chronic, progressive and currently irreversible.

Stage three
Significant swelling and toughening of the skin is evident. Skin folds and deep crevices may occur. The limb may leak lymph fluid. Good early care can often prevent such problems.

Therapy assists with relieving the symptoms of Lymphoedema and involves Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Compression bandaging / compression garments, Exercise and Skin Care.

Skin Care

Skin care is one of the most important aspects in reducing your risk of getting Lymphoedema or making it worse. It is vital to maintain the integrity of the skin so that bacteria does not enter the body and lead to infection. When you get a cut or injury to the tissue, the area usually becomes red and warm. This is due to fluid and proteins leaking out of the blood vessels and into the tissues making it an ideal environment for bacteria to grow in. Due to the reduced number of Lymphatic Vessels and Nodes, the excess fluid remains in the tissues and swelling results.

Maintaining Skin Integrity

• Wash daily using a pH neutral soap or soap substitute and dry thoroughly
• Moisturise daily with skin creams containing vitamin E and Aloe Vera or Sorbelene to maintain its suppleness. Care needs to be taken with compression garments as creams can damage the elastic components of the garments therefore do not moisturise immediately prior to donning garments
• Apply antiseptic creams such as Betadine to cuts and scratches immediately and cover with a fabric dressing
• Care should be taken when cutting nails and cuticles should not be cut
• Inspect skin for signs of fungal infections and treat appropriately
• Electric razors should be used to remove hair
• Use insect repellants in mosquito infested areas
• Where possible do not allow blood to be drawn or injections on affected or susceptible limbs. Sometimes this may be unavoidable
• Do not get sunburned – always wear a sunscreen or protective clothing and maintain a high moisture level on the skin.
• Wear protective gloves in the garden
• Wear rubber gloves when washing up and protect your hands when doing things like cooking, fishing, sewing or cutting up things.
• Treat even minor burns with cold running water. Keep an antiseptic or antibiotic in the house


If your limb appears bright red, painful, hot or swells rapidly then this usually means that you have a bacterial infection called Cellulitis also known as Erysipelas. You may also experience other symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting and generally feeling unwell. It is important to contact your Doctor or Hospital as soon as possible so that the infection can be treated with antibiotics. Good skin care reduces the likelihood of Cellulitis and further damage to the Lymphatic System.

As 2011 begins in earnest and the sun and holidays of last week are already beginning to fade, it is opportune for us to look forward to where we are heading and what we would like to achieve this year.

What would you like your life to look like in December 2011?
At your End of Year celebrations what will your achievements be?

Your results for the year reflect directly on your actions and these are underpinned by your planning – yes Goal Setting!!

I know –  setting goals is not particularly sexy but there is no reason that they can’t be fun and they are a great way to make positive change in your life.  Shift your thinking from thinking about goal setting as fixing something wrong in your world, consider setting goals more about – Getting what you want out of life!

What better way to take control of your life and the direction you are heading. A real reason to get up in the morning and enjoy our lives.

Some people have difficulty using the word ‘Goal’ – for them it conjures up a pass or fail – you either get the goal or miss the goal – they prefer to call them targets. They aim for targets!

10 tips for effective Goal Getting or Target Practice

  1. Dream and scheme big – plant the seeds and see them grow – you can prune later
  2. Align your goal with your values, passion and purpose for the best fit and achievability
  3. Be SMART about your goal
  4. Ask yourself is this a WANT goal, or ‘shoulda’, ‘coulda’ goals.  Only go for the WANT – and something the YOU really want to do, have, achieve
  5. Make a public declaration – tell others – be courageous and get it out there
  6. Create action steps –avoid the overwhelm by concentrating on the finish line
  7. Celebrate the milestones as you travel towards the destination.  Overwhelm is the blight to achieving your goals
  8. Practice flexibility – there are more ways than one to Mecca
  9. Lighten up – If your goal isn’t energising you – you don’t want it enough
  10. Get an Accountability Partner: Now the secret is to have a system of accountability, get the support you need. This can be an hour in your calendar every week, a buddy, a monthly team meeting, or a coach. The point is… JUST DO IT! This is the difference between success and meritocracy

What is Massage?

What is Massage?

Massage is touch – and touch is something we all do every day. An understanding of the body provides an insight into the therapeutic benefits of touch. Several different massage styles are available to us all today.

Relaxation Massage helps to relax both our mind and body. It is a smooth, gentle style of massage designed to release tension from within our bodies, and improve circulation and energy flow in the body. It can relieve the effects of excess stress many of us now experience by slowing down our heart rate.

Other benefits include relief of minor muscle pain and soreness after exercise. It speeds up recovery, improves movement and circulation and helps to eliminate toxins from our bodies.

Massage helps the muscles by stimulation of normal body processes. Waste products such as lactic acid is released from muscle fibres, enabling the muscles to move more freely. Combined with the benefits of mental relaxation, increases in muscle tone are returned to an optimum level.

Massage stimulates the central nervous system via peripheral nerves in the skin. This stimulates the autonomic nervous system. Where over stimulation of a particular system occurs, the therapeutic effects of massage help redress the internal balance, allowing the body to rest and regenerate.

Massage helps improve circulation through stimulation. Waste products are transported
from muscles via capillaries and veins, improving the transport of nutrients to the
muscles and organs via arteries and capillaries.

Massage stimulates the removal of metabolic wastes. The lymphatic system helps to
transport these wastes, excess fluid or the effects of injury are filtered by lymph vessels
and nodes, helping the body to repair itself ad recover.

Massage improves skin by increasing the blood supply, therefore helping to keep it
healthy. The applications of nourishing oils and waxes and use of different massage
strokes helps to slough off dead surface cells and moisturize the skin at a deeper level.

Lymphoedema and Compression Therapy

Lymphoedema and Compression Therapy

Compression Therapy is used in the management of Lymphoedema. This is achieved through a combination of Multi Layer Lymphoedema Bandages and/or Compression Garments which compensate for the lack of elasticity in the tissues caused by Lymphoedema. The aim of Compression Therapy is to reduce swelling in affected limbs and to maintain this reduction.

Multi Layer Lymphoedema Bandages

Bandages are used as part of the initial intensive phase of management known as Combined/Complex/Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) also known as Complex Physical Therapy (CPT). They are made from cotton and have very little stretch therefore they are called short stretch bandages. During rest they exert relatively little pressure against the tissues due to the lack of elastic properties, whereas during exercise bandages provide resistance against the tissues when the muscles contract and expand. As they press against the bandage the pressure inside the limb increases and stimulates the movement of fluid from the tissues into Lymphatic vessels and the pumping of fluid along Lymphatic vessels.

Multi Layers – Several layers of bandages are used.

Fingers and toes are individually wrapped with a conforming bandage to prevent or reduce swelling.

A tubular cotton liner is applied to the limb and acts as a protective, absorbent layer between the skin and the overlying compression bandages.

Soft synthetic wool padding or foam rolls or sheets are used to protect bony prominences, assist with softening areas of hard tissue and scar tissue and provide a cylindrical shape to allow easier application of the short stretch bandages.

Short stretch bandages are applied in several layers starting from the base of the fingers or toes. Pressure is greatest at these areas and reduces as the bandages go up the limb. This provides graduated compression and encourages fluid to move towards the heart via Lymphatic and Blood Vessels. Tape is used to secure bandages as pins or bandage clips can damage skin.

This initial phase of CDT is carried out daily for a period of between 2 -4 weeks or until there is no change in the volume or size of the limb. The bandages are worn all day and during the night. They are only removed for bathing then reapplied by a Qualified Lymphoedema Therapist. Bandages lose their elasticity after a few applications and this can be restored by washing with a liquid detergent. Two sets of bandages are usually required.

Compression Garments

These are used in the second or maintenance phase of CDT to maintain the reduction achieved in the initial stage or can be used instead of bandages depending on the severity of Lymphoedema. Garments may also be worn to assist with reducing the risk of developing Lymphoedema. They have the same effect on the tissues as Compression bandages.

There are two types of Compression Garment – Circular Knit and Flat Knit.
Circular Knit is manufactured by continuously knitting on a cylinder. They are thinner, more aesthetically acceptable and are available as readymade garments. Flat Knit is made as a flat piece to specific measurements then joined by a seam. They are usually custom made and are more suited to irregular shaped limbs.

Garments come in different levels of compression known as Classes and this is dependent on the severity of the Lymphoedema. Some people have to wear their compression garments during the day or when only doing exercise and some may have to wear them up to 24 hours a day. They should be replaced approximately every 6 months or sooner if they lose their elasticity. Sleeves and stockings should be cared for as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Generally 2 sets of garments are required to allow for washing. Care needs to be taken with compression garments as creams can damage their elastic properties therefore do not moisturise skin immediately prior to donning garments.

Compression Therapy is not suitable if infection is present; there is poor arterial circulation in the limb, uncontrolled heart failure, presence of Deep Vein Thrombosis or lack of sensation of the fingers or toes.

Your body is changing. Your life doesn’t have to. As a woman, you take your health seriously. You want to do everything you can to enjoy life to the fullest for years to come. You are a woman. What is estrogen and why is it important?

Estrogen is a hormone that regulates a number of functions in the body, including sexual function, bone health and proper cholesterol balance. Estrogen is both necessary and beneficial, but it can also be harmful to our health when our natural hormone levels are out of balance. Phytoestrogens are beneficial for men and women. Phytoestrogens are especially interesting because they are structural and when they consumed, they tend to act like weak estrogens. Prostate cancer, breast cancer, and even common menopausal maladies such as hot flashes have been found to be much more prevalent in Western societies, but almost unknown in many Eastern cultures.

Why? A closer look of each society’s diet and cancer rate differences, scientists found a link – the consumption of a soy-rich diet! A closer look at the soybean revealed that soy is rich in several phytoestrogens, including isoflavones like genistein and genistin. Genistein is considered the star isoflavone. Pharmaceutical companies have produced a synthetic variation of genistein called “ipriflavone. ” Tamoxifen is the synthetic counterpart to genistein and works to block the ability of estrogen to stimulate the kinds of changes in breast tissue that result in formation of tumors.

Genistein has been shown in some cases to support bone mass health, support prostate health, support and maintain healthy breast tissue and help support and maintain heart and artery health.

A healthy immune system works miracles daily. Increased demands on the immune system reduce its ability to protect our bodies from environmental pollutants, improper diet and other harmful elements that can lead to a decline in health and disease.

What is sugaring?

Sugaring is the ‘sweet alternative’ to waxing for hair removal.
First developed in Ancient Egypt, in the city of Alexandria, body sugaring dates back to the days of Cleopatra.   The women of Alexandria placed great value on aesthetics and cosmetics, and were convinced that a hairless body represented beauty, youth and virtue.  Using sugar and honey, natural ingredients that were celebrated for their therapeutic properties, they discovered this method of effectively and naturally removing hair from the body.

It is very similar to waxing but it has some significant advantages over waxing.
For example:
The sugar solution only sticks to the hairs, whereas the wax substance sticks to the hair and skin. This means that there is far less pain involved because the skin is not pulled when the sugar is removed. Great for those intimate soft spots!!
The solution is applied warm rather than hot like wax, minimising discomfort.
Sugars contain natural substances and are gentle on the skin, whereas the wax substance contains chemicals which may irritate the skin.

Men have one exception – they cannot use sugaring on the beard due to a different hair root system.
To obtain the best results, hairs should be at least 1/4 inch or 6 mm long. This method of removing hair usually lasts between 4 and 6 weeks. Repeated sugaring treatments will often weaken the hair follicle, making it easier to remove hairs over time.

COLOUR is more important in our lives than we sometimes realize.

From the time we get up in the morning when we decide what we will wear this day, to the time we go to bed in our bedroom where the décor on the walls and floors might decide how good our sleep will be, we are influenced by the colours on us and around us.

Look at the colour/colours that you are picking out to wear each day, as that can reflect what sort of mood you will have for that day. If you have chosen wisely your mood will be good for that day.

It also depends what you are be going to do today – if you have an important meeting or you are going for an interview – wearing red is great as it gives you confidence and you will project yourself well, but also be careful because it might make you speed in the car as your confidence soars.

If you need to be cool and calm for whatever reason, blue is very calming.
Also good when you are needing peace, solitude and rest, hence this is a good colour to have as your décor in your bedroom as it portrays a tranquil and peaceful environment.

Yellow is good when you are working to improve your concentration and staying alert.

Wearing orange can help the body return to a state of balance after shock or stress.

Green is a very healing colour, the colour of nature.

Violet and Purple should be worn when you need to rebalance your life, to calm hyperactivity or energise depression. Also to get more inspiration and be receptive to spiritual guidance.

Pink is to feel love, forgiveness and peace.

White brings a positive, refreshing and optimistic mindset and counteracts negative thinking.

Grey portrays quality, maturity, professionalism and neutrality.

Brown is good if you want to re-focus and get a down to earth attitude to portray yourself as a no nonsense and hard-working reliable person.

Wearing mostly black is an ‘easy colour to hide away in’. You can blend in and be accepted with a sense of dignity and mystery. You feel like you are in charge and powerful.

When you have picked your clothes for the next day, just stop and see what colours you have picked and look above and see what and how that can affect the day ahead, both for good or bad. You should go with the first choice you make as that will be the right one for you for that day.

Also, next time you are going to redecorate your house inside take very close notice of the colours you are going to pick as they are very important decisions to make for you and all of the occupants in your house for peace and harmony.
